A Week in Trôo in the Loire Valley
This is a lovely cottage on top of a cave, on the side of a hill of troglodyte caves, many of which have been turned into quaint homes and rentals. There is no street to the cottage. Instead, you park at the church at the top and walk down a path. It is very private, with a beautiful yard overlooking the Loir River and Loire Valley. We first stayed here as a getaway from Paris in the spring of 2010, and the fields were covered in a gorgeous yellow crop of rapeseed. This fall the scenery was lush green. The cottage is a delight, very well equipped kitchen, good wifi, and very clean, with comfortable bed and seating. The bedroom and bath are on the lower level, and a pull-out sofa and love seat on the top level in the great room. Garden furniture is comfortable, and since the property is fenced, our dog could lounge outside during the day. (This is a great place for a well-mannered dog!) I should add that in lieu of using the circular staircase, which our large golden retriever couldn't maneuver, you can access the bedroom/bathroom level by walking down a few garden steps to the bedroom's exterior door.
There are lovely walks along the hillside and up to the top and down to the river. A few good restaurants are around, our favorite being Auberge St. Catherine. Kate the owner is very accommodating and easy to reach with any questions. She has stocked the cottage with many brochures of things to do in the area. Having done a lot of sightseeing the first time we were there, we mostly enjoyed sitting in the yard reading and enjoying the fall weather. But you could keep yourself very busy with sightseeing.
Since we now spend most of the year in SW France, we look forward to returning in years to come.
Charming cottage very comfortable-it was sad to leave..
We fell in love with Kate’s cottage above cave Yuccas. The view from the terrace of the Loire, the town and green pastures is breathtaking. The kitchen is well supplied and a pleasure to cook in. We highly recommend Kate’s place.
Cozy and tranquil
This small house was an ideal place to relax in the evenings and take short daytrips during the week. We didn't come close to exhausting the things we had wanted to do during our seven day stay yet we never travelled more than 50 miles away from Troo. And once we returned to Cave Yuccas, we plopped ourselves down outside and enjoyed the views until the sun went down.
Yuccas cave feels like coming home on a mountain. Each day we enjoyed the stunning views, clean air and the brilliance of the stars at night. The house itself is lovely and practical and the environs have so much to offer. Troo truly is an artist´s place to be. Our three kids could not get enough of the butterflies and lizards in the garden and the nearbye Courtanvaux castle as well as the swimmingpool in Besse-sur-Braye. The impressive Chambord castle is only an hour away and definetely worthwhile a visit. Bathing in the river under a medieval bridge in Lavardin was also a favourite. Your visit to Troo however is not complete without dining at the Cheval Blanc, a gastronomic delight and experience, which also does children's menus. At Besse there is a small supermarket, that sells all the locally made cheeses, which I wished I had taken home. We stayed a week and were all sad to leave, already planning our next visit. Highly recommended.
Merci beaucoup for the Bessé supermarket tip! I go to the farmers market on the square on Saturday morning when I want a smaller, more local market experience than the bustling Montoire Saturday farmers market. There is a Wednesday market in Montoire as well with dry goods, clothing, and of course farmers' produce, cheese and meats.
