Quiet, rustic, charming, getaway in the Irish midlands
A grand typical Irish farmhouse cottage, in a beautiful area.
Stayed for a week in September with my wife & 2 year old, who loved being able to walk up the road to see the cows on the adjacent farm, and across the field to the old pier on Lough Ree; the sunsets over the lake are beautiful! There were hedges filled with juicy ripe blackberries, so we had our fill on our morning walks, much to our toddlers delight.
It's a scenic drive (down some narrow country roads), and we arrived to a plate of home-baked treats and a warm turf fire in the cozy sitting room. The property is exactly what you see in the pictures of the listing, you get what you see; a charming rustic farmhouse, much like where my parents and grandparents would have grown up. If you're looking for glitz, glamour & decadence; this likely isn't the place for you. But if you want a quiet getaway in the heart of Ireland, this is a great place to to unplug, relax, and leave your cares behind. Familiarity breeds contempt as they say, and the Irish midlands held no great appeal for me, having grown up there and fled for the bustle of Galway and the mountains of Connemara after school, but after 12 years in the west of Ireland, and another 10 in the US Midwest I found a new appreciation for the landscape of the midlands. The rolling green hills and quiet roads that once seemed so dull were now charming, and even the boglands, dreaded each summer by kids that had to foot, stack, & bag turf, were a understated palette of muted pastel purples, reds, green & brown. There's some nice walks nearby at Corlea Trackway Visitor Center, and along the Royal Canal at Islandbridge, both near Keenagh, and some walks in Newcastle woods near Ballymahon, and the nearby Barley Harbour is a another beautiful spot to look out on Lough Ree.

A wonderful place to stay!
The owners made us feel right at home.
The place really felt like a home, very secluded, and we loved the fact that we could go right out back and visit the cows, or visit the lough!
This place is a good, central location for visiting both sides of Ireland - about 2 hours to each.
Overall, we loved it and can't wait to get back to Ireland!
